Academic background and research interests:

Dr. Rabiu K. B. Asante is a forward-thinking scholar whose work sits at the intersection of sociology, technology, and public health. Dr. Asante is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Sociology at the University of Ghana, and has held courtesy appointments at the University of South Florida’s Department of Anthropology and School of Social Work and is a Research Fellow at the MH-RITES Research Centre, University of Houston. His academic journey includes a Ph.D. and M.Phil. in Sociology from the University of Ghana and a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of South Florida. Dr. Asante’s research explores a wide range of contemporary issues, including digital gaming, mHealth, gambling, mental health, and the social implications of ICT in African contexts. He is particularly interested in how digital technologies shape informal markets, social networks, and youth culture. With extensive experience in both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, Dr. Asante integrates data science tools into his teaching and research, equipping students with critical skills for the digital age. His work has been supported by numerous prestigious grants and fellowships, and he is widely published in areas that reflect his commitment to social innovation and interdisciplinary inquiry. Dr. Asante’s presence in the department enriches the academic community and exemplifies the transformative potential of socially engaged scholarship.
