BIOGRAPHY
Melissa McCormick is a doctoral candidate currently completing her dissertation research at ľ¹ÏÊÓƵ. She is an organizational and interpersonal communication scholar, and her work considers how individuals manage their private information in an organizational context. Her longitudinal dissertation study focuses on the experiences of first-generation students and how they navigate socialization in the first year of a graduate program. She also asks questions about how overlapping aspects of students' identities (e.g. the overlap of first-generation status and SES) play a role in their experiences. While she is using qualitative methods in her dissertation study, she also has experience in conducting quantitative research. Her mixed-methods thesis focused on how graduate students engage in academic comparison and competition in their cohorts.
She is serving her second year as the Assistant Director of Public Speaking at ľ¹ÏÊÓƵ and has a passion for mentoring both undergraduate students and graduate teaching instructors. She has experience facilitating pedagogy workshops, creating educational materials (e.g. sample lesson plans and chapter outlines), and serving as a reviewer for a textbook.
Before coming to ľ¹ÏÊÓƵ, Melissa obtained her MA from Auburn University (War Eagle!). She earned her BS from Florida Southern College in Lakeland, FL, where her biggest supporters and best friends (her parents) currently reside.
